There’s a favor you can do for your next Uber driver: Tell them how much you are paying for the ride.

Drivers can no longer get that information. This, combined with diminishing earnings, has left many anxious over their already unstable income.

In fact, this isn’t the first time Uber has fiddled with the “customer payments” feature on the Uber app that drivers use. Mission Local discovered in July, 2021,  that Uber was showing drivers an amount significantly lower than what the customer was actually charged.

The article gained tremendous traction, and Uber made a concession, announcing it would show drivers the full fare charged to customers.

“Obviously, we want to see if it’s fair, what the passengers are paying versus what we’re getting paid,” said a San Francisco Uber driver, who asked to remain anonymous to avoid potential retaliation from the company. For him, this is yet another example of Uber taking a bigger cut of the fee and giving drivers less, even as customers are paying more.

“They’re trying to see what they can get away with,” he said.

Uber drivers used to receive a breakdown on their app after each ride. It would show how much the passenger paid, how much Uber took, additional costs incurred, and how much the driver would ultimately receive.

Starting late this summer, however, the customer payments information disappeared, leaving drivers with no easy way to check their payment against Uber’s stake.

“I think it rolled out at different times over the last three months. They don’t do a sudden change to everybody all at the same time,” said Nicole Moore, president of gig worker group Rideshare Drivers United.

Uber has not responded to a request for comment on the change. Mission Local’s small experiment, however, illustrates one of the possible reasons for the abrupt change: Money.

Mission Local booked five Uber rides in San Francisco recently, and asked drivers to share the amount of money they received from each ride. With the help of the drivers, we came up with a crude average of their share: 49.5 percent. Essentially, drivers are receiving less than half the money customers pay. One of the drivers spent almost 25 minutes on the order but only made $6.67.

Mission Local booked five Uber rides in San Francisco recently, and asked drivers to share the amount of money they received from each ride. Chart by Yujie Zhou.

When Mission Local booked 10 Uber trips in July, 2021, a driver’s average take was significantly higher: 56 percent. Over the course of about a year, a driver’s revenue as a percentage of passenger payments has fallen by more than 6 percent.

Still, Uber seems to have left a small hole for drivers to peer through the darkness. At the bottom of the trip details page, there is a line that reads, “To see a summary of customer payments and Uber service fees, go to drivers.uber.com.”

In theory, drivers might be able to laboriously type the link into their browser and check the website. But when the aforementioned driver left the app and made the attempt, he was still unable to open the page a minute and half later.

Unsurprisingly, he gave up. “For me, it’s nice to know if I could just click a button and see a summary. But I prefer not to waste my time,” he said.

Some of the drivers Moore works with at Rideshare Drivers United have also spotted the notice in fine print and struggled to open it. “But not everybody told me they can find that, so I think that they’re trying to hide it completely,” she said. Drivers almost went through the whole website to find the individual ride breakdown.

Gig workers don’t have time to jump through such hoops. As Mission Local previously reported, full-time rideshare drivers are often in their cars at least 12 hours a day, and some even spend the night in parking lots to save time.

Drivers asking each passenger for the specifics on what they are paying just isn’t feasible. “I don’t want to be bothering them,” said one driver.

Lyft has a longer history of hiding customer payments from drivers than Uber. In 2019, Moore recalled, drivers discovered Lyft was charging customers “a lot more” money than it was paying drivers and, right around this time, Lyft hid payments from drivers as well. “Because they didn’t want it on the Internet, how much people were being charged versus how much drivers were being paid,” she said.

Lyft has also not replied to Mission Local’s request for a comment.

“The reason that Uber and Lyft both hide how much they’re charging passengers from the driver is because it is a huge vulnerability to the company for people to know that,” Moore said. “The companies are literally using drivers as their bank account, and they’re squeezing us dry.”

On a popular online forum for Uber drivers, a post titled “Uber — They’ve Finally Hid The Customer Payments” has been getting a lot of attention since August. Drivers were outraged by the change.

“This new hidden information policy is a blatant attempt by Uber to short change the driver, by hiding any customer price hikes to keep more of the actual fare price. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS,” said one of the comments.

Another reads, “Probably best that I’m not tempted to look at what Uber charged while driving. If I want to have a stroke, I can log into the website from home where I won’t take anybody else out with me.”

  1. While I was in Boston I took three Ubers: first one I was charged $56. Driver said he was getting $38.
Second: I paid $41, driver said he was getting $22. Third: I paid $44, driver was getting $25.
Uber is screwing their drivers and screwing us. This process I paid are what a cab would have been.

  2. This is the response I got from Uber when I questioned why I could no longer see what a rider paid.
    Thanks for contacting Uber.
    We’re here to help.
    I understand your concern
related to the rider fare. Due
    to privacy reasons, we cannot
    disclose this information.
    The amount riders pay is
    separate from what you earn.
    This helps ensure that your
    earnings don’t vary due to
    estimation and allows us to
    offer rider promotions
    without impacting your
    earnings.
    The Uber app estimates the
    length of each trip and
    generates an upfront fare for
the rider before a trip starts.
    It then calculates the
    potential earnings based on
    estimated fare + time +
    distance, including any fees
or tolls that get paid out to
    others.

  3. When a company is abusing you, you should GTH out – you don’t spend MORE time and energy trying extra hard to get them to stop abusing you. It doesn’t work. I don’t go after the gimicks, rewards and status – I drive for Uber and don’t expect to be treated well by an exploitative company. I turn my attention towards GTH out, getting an education and better training towards a better job.

  4. Uber hides a lot of things from the driver so they can exploit the driver. The customers want rides, they would pay an extra base fee on those short rides to make sure the driver is getting paid fairly and doesn’t cancel on them. Uber doesn’t have to exploit the driver in order to make money, but Uber, like many USA companies, has a culture of exploitation.

  5. Driving is a skill that takes no education, no degree and no skill. If you don’t drive for Uber you’d be flippn burgers or something similar, with a bratty teenage boss. McDs also takes more than 90% of their customer’s fee, all companies in USA exploit their workers – workers have little protections here beyond getting different job, jumping to the next employer who maybe exploits workers a little less. Driving for Uber is not a life-long dream-job – its a placeholder for something better.

I live in the country, there is no public transportation in my area. I don’t drive 35 miles into the city to pick up a $3 fare because that’s stupid. I don’t get many rides but when I do my per hour rate is pretty high. I make about $100-$200 per week. That’s all this app does. It’s not a full time job.

    1. consult with an atty. my opinion, keep a log, each time you pick someone up, write down how much uber says the ride is and next to that, write what the rider is actually paying. (Obv you have to ask the customer how much hes paying). Then when youve had ENOUGH, call an atty. or go to the MCAD. idk where you are from, but here in Boston we have the MCAD which is the Mass Comission Against Discrimination. either one (atty or mcad is suffice) Good luck!

  11. Uber is taking 70% on pretty much all my trips. Leaving me with nothing after i pay for gas. How is this even legal in the USA? WHY ISN’T ANYONE IN WASHINGTON INVESTIGATING THIS SCAM? NOBODY IN BUSINESS WHO HIRES SUB CONTRACTORS HIDES THE BREAKDOWN AND THE MAN OR WOMAN DOING THE WORK WITH THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT ALWAYS GETS THE BIGGER CUT OF THE PAID JOB BY A CLIENT. HOW IN THE HELL IS THIS COMPANY GETTING AWAY WITH EXPLOITING DRIVERS? WE DONT LIVE IN A SWEAT SHOP COUNTRY. THERE IS LAWS IN PLACE AGAINST THIS SICK INHUMANE BEHAVIOR. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT THIS SICK SCAM.

  12. I’m 50 years old & Uber is the biggest scam I’ve ever seen in my life , the drivers for the most part are desperate & the riders are ignorant that we literally make no money …IF the riders knew , they would tip better, lol

I figured this out in 6 weeks of driving , with basic “applied “ math….

IMO Buy all the Uber Stock that you can afford, even if you only have $50 , that’s your only chance to get ahead…… I rarely comment online about anything, …. (because insults & attacks are standard, afterwords, I guess that’s human nature?)

BUT I’m very passionate about this , Drivers are being treated like slaves, this shouldn’t be legal !!! It’s really sad.

Im driving so I don’t go insane at home waiting for surgery, and FU treatments …

  13. Y’all need to stop the complaining. The whole world knows by now UBER is a scam yet people do not care anymore and nothing will change. Drivers will keep driving longer and making less money,no solidarity here, every driver for him/herself. This a selfish business and Uber and drivers behave equally irresponsibly, every person dreams that this will change, no it won’t , Uber is as American now as apple pie and is here to stay and will continue to do it with Uber math and gimmicks and dumb people will just continue to do it and accept it.

    2. So why dont you call the passengers dumb also for asking us to pick them up. Its a good service for people who need rides but nobody has the right to steal money from workers no matter what the industry is in united states. We dont live in sweatshop china exploiting working people. Uber is a scam and nobody should be allowed to do this. Dont you dare call drivers stupid. This sick company bait and switch crap with lies and putting cab companies out of business with a ponzi scheme. This is a service industry job and this company is stealing money from drivers. If you sit there abd act like nobody can stop them, then it is YOU WHO IS STUPID!!!!! Google lies with allowing them to say they take 25% on the internet, when in fact they take 70% from drivers and this is WHY THEY HIDE THE BREAKDOWN. BECAUSE IT IS SICK AND A HUGE SCAM. THE BIGGEST SCAM IN HISTORY IS UBER AND THEY MUST BE STOPPED. WE WILL NOT STOP UNTIL THEY GO TO JAIL LIKE THAT OTHER SCAMMER FTX. CEO OF UBER BELONGS IN PRISON FOR THIS.

  14. Focus on what Eric Martin commented
My mind is formatted by creating a solution to a problem.
    I read many comments
Stop complaining about the issue and
Let’s stop uber and we need numbers
Once that solution has been achieve
    Complaining will disappear .

Any comments should be directed to form the stop driving until uber back to letting all rider fees be seen.
This walk of must be reported
    To the local News paper,
    The TV news , started
    By a large group
    Of walk of
    Drivers
    and then
    Make complaints.

Some how before we do the walk off
We get a bunch of drivers to Document
the truth with screen shots of Driver pay screen and Riders charge. Kindly ask rider for a screen shot of charge.

Can we have a show of commitment to get justice. Trust me right now if the domino effect if uber driver document this rip off and even on a individual
Level start reporting it to News or Attorneys.
And did a stop drive .
    Uber would change.

    1. Well i own DRIVERSTRIKE.COM AND RIDESHAREDRIVERSMATTER.COM AND I HAVE TSHIRTS READY FOR STRIKE. I AM IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND I WANT THIS COMPANY TO BURN IN HELL FOR THIS SICK INHUMANE SWEATSHOP GROSS COMPANY EXPLOITING DRIVERS AND NOW PASSENGERS DONT EVEN TIP BUT YET THEY WILL BUY A 15 DOLLAR DRINK AT A BAR AND TIP THE BARTENDER. Bartender doesn’t need to buy gas to make the drink. Waitress doesn’t need to gas up her shoes to get from the kitchen to your tables with food but they get tips even though you all pay double now for the food you eat. Passengers are disgusting for taking rides in our cars and stiffing us all the time. You all will get your karma for this. We dont get paid salary or by the hour. We work on commission but Uber is ripping us all off. Take the bus or walk or drive YOURSELVES if you dont want to tip the drivers for this service.

Let’s some how create a stand off.
Stop driving and demand to see
Rider fee, with a fair uber percentage.

Networkers here that are commenting help, now !!!!!!!!
    Let’s begin

Stop wasting talking about all other topics.
Focus on all of these forum comments to all start a STOP driving , we must all pick a walk off date.

Stop letting it happen because we need to force uber to stop stealing.

We need every one doing this state by state or nationally. All at once.

Can some one comment on how.
Do we get drivers to agree and pick a same date.

We have to get a open forum onto googles top pages when the word UBER is searched. They keep paying Google algorithm to get it on the top page that they give the drivers everything except 25% this is a flat out lie we need to get this on to Google the real truth so when Uber is searched that the truth is on the top not the lies that they are putting on the web. Lets begin. Lets do it.

  16. Why do some major company breach 20 % percentage contract cut for uber and obviously get away with it. It should be a criminal crime punishable. To rob citizens.
How do we get back all the money uber is stealing. Should all of this stolen money be returned. Uber and lyft are crookes.
How do we trust America from letting major companies steal from tax payers.

  17. I’m 62 and used to be able to make $200 to $250 a day which is greatly needed to pay my mortgage + bills, I’m lucky if I make $100 a day not that Uber cut our pay. This should be illegal. I even bought a new car so I could drive for uber. We have to pay for oil changes, tire rotations, washing our car, vacuuming and other maintenance need plus fuel!!!! I bought my car in September, it’s now February, in 5 months I have put 27,664 miles on my brand new car. My personal use is to go to the grocery stor and take my kids to and home from work. This is at the most 50 miles per day. I’m presently looking for a rideshare company that actually cares about their drivers…. unlike Uber whom definitely is out for themselves only!!!

    1. I agree and I’m wondering how come the IRS isn’t stepping in because all the Uber drivers are working but taking a loss and there’s no taxes being paid so we’re out there riding the roads burning up the cars with miles and nobody’s paying taxes because we are losing money because of Uber stealing all the PROFIT. Then they dont pay taxes either. We cant even make it work to show any income because there is no income. Uber has managed to take all of the profit. Same here I used to make 250 everyday as long as I worked the right times and did everything, now I can’t even make $100 dollars in 12 hours of working, and then after gas and all the expenses there is no money we’re not even making $5 an hour and they want to keep posting on Google that we make 25 and $30 an hour, this is a lie, the biggest scam in history in this country is UBER. This CEO BELONGS IN PRISON FOR THIS.

    to steal above the percentage.
    Why, are the drivers letting
    this happen.

    Do a stand off!!!!

Uber will make the change once all the no ride complaints begin

    Plus, this hits the news..

    Stop letting uber steal.

  20. Uber is no longer showing the drivers how much they’re getting paid for minutes and miles driven.
In other words there is no set pay for miles and minutes. Uber will offer the driver $5 to go from point A to point B.
Uber will underestimate the time of the ride instead of 7 minutes it may end up being 15 minutes. Drivers are no longer compensated for time. Drivers are no longer compensated for going around a blocked road an extra 2 mi and you still get your five bucks.

I stop doing food orders cause it’s not worth the fare. we all should turn the Uber driver app off for one week till Uber pays better. We need to band together like real usa citizens. Even for riders request I get paid $4 to $6 per trip. Let’s band together and turn apps off and not accept trips request. That will hurt Uber like they are hurting hard working people. Let’s show them how it feels!

    1. The problem is that more drivers are waiting to drive for Uber…so if 1000 drivers leave, they have a pool of 5000 new drivers to choose from. Those 5000 are desperate af to find work, and they are delighted when Uber gives them the green light to drive for them. Drivers are so easily replaceable. Even if there is a shortage of drivers on any given day, Uber will just charge more (and take more) while giving a smaller cut to the driver than the previously did 3-4 years ago…

  22. It is worse than what your article is referring to. In Nashville on Nov 29th 2022 I had a $11 surge ride. But the total fare paid to me the driver was $15.79 for 21 miles and 30 minute ride. That means the ride was only $4.79. The very next ride went back to the same airport. Fare paid to driver was $16.60 for 22 miles and 28 minutes without any surge. The surge is now only a gimmick. They reduced the regular fare by the surge amount.

    1. Yes exactly, i have been saying for months we have no surge. It is fake. But the passengers still pay surge price but Uber pockets the money. They give nothing to the drivers. If they have a surge it’s fake because they lower The upfront Fair before the surge there is no surge this is the biggest scam it’s total manipulation and trickery.

  24. Yes. My app allowed me to see customers’ payments for a brief week in November. Then,on Thankgiving eve it was gone!! I always log into my account at the end of the day and see how much money uber took from me. If I can see it in real time, I may get upset and head back home. They know what they’re doing. One example from last night, customer payments : $71, Uber kept $25 and gave me $36 and the rest went to insurance! Criminal.

    1. Well at least you got more because on all my trips in South Florida Uber keeps taking more than what I get on every single trip they take 50% plus 5 to $10 extra. I never make more then them on every single trip. Because they are exploiting the immigrants that are here and they are getting away with it in South Florida Miami Fort Lauderdale.

Wish there were limits on how much they could take like there is for food delivery.

  27. I have been driving over four years
Uber is definitely taking a bigger percentage after their “upfront pricing” scam they’ve instituted.
    I’ve surveyed many of
    My riders and found im
    Lucky if
I get 50 percent of the fare!
A good example of Uber nickel and diming drivers: minimum fare in San Francisco was always 6.00
    Now it’s 5.27 cents or 5.46 cents.
    Whenever Uber sees it’s
Bottom line shrinking they screw the drivers.

      1. This is happening here in Hawaii. I have my riders tell me how much they are paying. For example $41. I got $18. Rider paid $81. I received $35. Uber does not show what the rider paid. Instead they show “increased” in green to make you happy. But it’s a rider tip and some small cents for wait time.
