A law-enforcement source tells Mission Local that California Highway Patrol officers have shot a person allegedly wielding a knife on Highway 280 not far from 20th Street.
All lanes on southbound 280 are blocked as a clutch of CHP vehicles are now on the scene.
The status of the person who has been shot is not known at this time.
Messages to the CHP have not yet been returned.
Update, 10:40 p.m.: The CHP provided the following statement:
At approximately 4:30 p.m. officers assigned to the California Highway Patrol’s San Francisco Area Office were dispatched to a pedestrian on the freeway in the area of Interstate 280 (I-280) southbound, south of Mariposa Street. An officer arrived on scene, at which time a struggle ensued with the pedestrian. An officer involved shooting took place and the pedestrian was struck by gunfire. A knife, suspected to be in possession by the subject, was recovered at the scene. The suspect has been transported to a local hospital for treatment, and is expected to survive.
This statement is inclusive of all available and releasable information. This is an ongoing investigation and, as you are aware, will include days and weeks of follow up and interviews. Thank you for your patience as we worked to identify what information we could release tonight.
This is a breaking story and will be updated when possible.
Is there an update on this?
Sadly no. I have put in requests for body-cam footage.

This seems like a strange place for a person to be on foot, but there are a handful of seriously disturbed folks living in an encampment on Pennsylvania between Mariposa & 18th who I see walking on and around the Mariposa onramp. Officials have cleared the illegal encampment multiple times but within days they are back with apparently no repercussions. There was also a double murder near this location a few months ago.
